Animal Health Certificates (AHCs) in Cumbria & North Lancashire

Obtaining an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is an essential part of travelling to Europe with your dog, cat, or ferret, but understanding the requirements can be confusing.  1. Microchip Requirements

• Mandatory Placement: Every pet travelling abroad must have a working microchip implanted before any other travel preparation can officially count.

• Database Registration: While we do not need to verify or obtain your pet's microchip details simply to issue the Animal Health Certificate (AHC), it is highly recommended that you check your registration with your microchip database. Please ensure your microchip and contact details are current, accurate, and that your pet is registered correctly before you leave.

2. Rabies Vaccination

• The 21-Day Rule: Every travelling pet must be vaccinated against rabies before departure. There is a minimum waiting period of 21 days between the rabies vaccination date and the issuing of your AHC.

  • Example – Rabies Vaccination given on the 1st June – The first day it is possible to issue the AHC is the 22nd June

• Brand Variations: Please note that the 21-day timeline is the absolute minimum. Depending on the specific vaccine brand your vet used, the manufacturer's licence may require a longer waiting period before travel is permitted.

• Microchip Check: When the rabies vaccination is administered, your vet must scan your pet's microchip first to verify that it is working. The vet must also document in your pet's clinical history a confirmation that the microchip was successfully read prior to giving the vaccination.

• Plan Ahead: We strongly recommend getting your pet's rabies vaccination done well in advance. This gives us plenty of time to check your paperwork and prepare the AHC without any last-minute stress.

3. Paperwork Checks

To get the process started, we need to review your pet's medical history:

• Initial Inquiry: Contact us via email at info@lakespettravel.com or use our online enquiry forms. Please include your travel dates, travel plans, and the first EU country your pet will be entering after leaving the UK.

• Vaccination History: You will need to request that your primary veterinarian sends your pet’s complete vaccination history directly to us so we can verify all details prior to issuing the AHC. Please ask them to email it to: info@lakespettravel.com

• EU Pet Passports: If you are using an EU Pet Passport issued prior to 22nd April 2026, as your proof of rabies vaccination, we will need you to scan and email us specific pages. Please send clear copies of the pages to info@lakespettravel.com detailing:

  • The microchip and identification of the pet

  • The rabies vaccination section

  • Any additional vaccination sections

4. Issuing the AHC & Booking

• Confirmation & Appointment: Once all of your paperwork is verified and correct, we will send you a confirmation email. We will then arrange a collection appointment that fits with your intended travel date.

• Invoicing & Payment: Once your appointment is locked into our calendar, an invoice will be generated and emailed to you for BACS payment. To qualify for our Standard AHC price (or Repeat AHC price), full payment must be received at least 7 days prior to your collection appointment.

5. Collection Appointment

• The Meeting Location: Collection of the AHC will be organized at a designated public car park location near Junction 36 of the M6.

• Pet & Owner Attendance:

  • The pet that is travelling must be present at the appointment so we can physically scan and verify their microchip.

  • The owner who is travelling with the pet must also be present to sign the official Owner Declaration, which is a mandatory part of the AHC paperwork.

  • There are slightly different variations of the Owner Declaration if the pet is travelling with a courier or a friend. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.

• Finalizing the Certificate: For our official records, a photograph will be taken of the completed and signed Owner Declaration. We need to legally keep records of all issued AHCs for 3 years. Once the microchip is successfully verified and the paperwork is signed, the AHC documentation is yours to take!

6. Travel Timelines

• The 10-Day Window: The date your AHC is issued counts as Day 1. From this point, you have until midnight on Day 10 to successfully cross the border and enter the EU.

  • Example – For an AHC signed and issued on the 1st August, the 10th August would be the final Day 10 for travel

7. Worming Requirements

• Dogs Only: Worming treatments are required for dogs only; cats and ferrets are exempt.

• Target Parasite: The treatment administered must be active against the Echinococcus multilocularis tapeworm (typically containing Praziquantel or an approved equivalent).

Travelling Directly from the UK to the EU/Specified Countries

• Direct to 5 Specified Countries: If your dog is travelling directly from the UK to Finland, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway, or Malta, they must be treated by a vet between 24 hours and 120 hours (1–5 days) before going through the Traveller's Point of Entry (TPE) arriving in the destination country. This treatment must be documented by the vet on the AHC.

• Direct to Other EU Countries: If you are travelling directly from the UK to other EU countries (such as France, Spain, or Germany), there is no requirement for a worming treatment before you leave the UK.

Returning from the EU to the UK

• The Standard Return Rule: The vast majority of dogs returning to the UK from the EU must receive a tapeworm treatment administered by a vet between 24 hours and 120 hours (1–5 days) before crossing back into the UK. This must be documented by the vet on your AHC.

• The 5 Return Exceptions: Your dog does not need a return worming treatment if you are entering the UK directly from Finland, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway, or Malta.

• Signing at Collection: If your travel window allows, we can administer and sign off the worming section of the AHC during your collection appointment.

• What You Need to Bring: If you want us to handle this at your appointment, you must ask your primary veterinarian to prescribe the correct worming dose for your dog. Please bring the medication with you to the collection appointment, along with any tasty treats needed to help your dog take it. We will then certify the treatment on your AHC right there as part of your collection process.
